How tall is the edge at hudson yards?

Edge observation decks, unique views from the vantage point of Hudson Yards on the far western edge of Manhattan. And it's included in New York C3. Rising to 1,131 feet (336 meters), Edge is the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere and is the newest addition to New York's many architectural marvels.

The Edge inside

DIGITAL INSTALLATIONS

In addition to stunning views from the latest observation deck, get ready to plunge into the world of modern technologies, innovative installations, video, audio and lighting effects at the highest level.

VIDEO ELEVATOR

The Edge is located on the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards, where you take the high-speed elevator in just 52 seconds! The walls inside the elevator are made of large screens, which during the ride show an animation dedicated to the creation of the Hudson Yards complex.

PANORAMIC VIEWS

From different parts of the observation deck, it offers a fantastic view of almost 360 degrees, which gives you the opportunity to observe a completely unique panorama of New York. From here, you can see the city's most famous landmarks, including the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building to the east, the World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty to the south, the Hudson River to the west, and Central Park to the north.

GLASS FLOOR, CORNER AND STEPS

Looking for an extra adrenaline rush? Thrill-seekers can walk along the glass floor built into one part of the observation deck. The glass floor covers 21 sq.m. observation deck and showcases a view of the streets below.

The Eastern Point is a small space at the tip of the observation deck. There, surrounded only by glass and sky, you can take great photos.

Another interesting location is the Skyline Steps granite staircase. You can sit on it and enjoy the views.

RESTAURANT

On the 101st floor there is a restaurant of modern American cuisine Peak.

Lunch: 11:45-15:00 from Thursday to Sunday

Dinner: Daily from 17:00 to 22:00

If you want to book dinner here, try to choose a table in the southeast corner for the best view.

*A visit to the observation deck is included in the price of dinner.

BAR

In addition to the restaurant in the Edge you will find three bars, one outside during the warmer months and two bars located on different levels inside.

CLOSED AREA

Remember that if the weather gets windy or chilly, you can always enjoy the view from inside - from the covered observation deck, which also spans several levels.

What is the best time to go to the edge NYC?

Going early in the morning, around noon or even in the last hours before closing, can be good options? For you to consider making this family walk in silence. Remember that the Observatory has a bar and a restaurant, so you can also enjoy lunch or dinner, surrounded by a movie view.

How long does it take to visit Edge NYC

There are no restrictions - you can spend as much time as you want in Edge. The average duration of a visit is 45 minutes to an hour.

The time indicated on your ticket is the period in which you can climb the observation deck. From the moment you climb up, your time is not limited in any way.

Screening and security measures

Like other New York attractions, Hudson Yards follows public health guidelines. Therefore, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is mandatory to wear a medical mask (inside) to visit the Edge, and all guests aged 12 and over must present a vaccination certificate at the entrance. You can read more about vaccination rules here.

At the entrance you will need to go through security and a metal detector.

CITY CLIMB NYC THE EDGE - STEP BY STEP

After the practical information, let's move on to the fun: we upload!

  • The Edge entrance is located on the  4th floor of the Hudson Yards shopping center,  The Shops at Hudson Yards. In addition to the ticket office, you will find a neighborhood souvenir shop where you can wait until boarding time.
  • The first thing you'll find upon entering the attraction  are corridors with exhibits over Hudson Yards that lead you to the security checkpoint and the elevator. Along the way, you'll be given the opportunity to take a picture of yourself (which you can later buy or download for free to your mobile).
  • We did not find any queue and in a matter of a couple of minutes we were ready to go up.
  • It's time to get on the elevator. The Edge is located on the 100th floor of the building, at a height of 345 meters. But, despite these figures… the journey to the observatory takes only 60 seconds ! With projections on the elevator walls, the ride goes by even faster, but your ears are likely to get plugged.
  • Doors open...welcome to the Edge!

When is the best time to climb the Edge?

The most beautiful time to visit the observation deck is at sunset. But you should keep in mind that tickets for this time are always sold out in advance and cost $10 more. Therefore, we recommend purchasing your ticket well in advance.

The observation deck is open all weather, however the management reserves the right to close the open part of the Edge in inclement or extreme weather at its sole discretion for safety reasons.

If the Edge (or part of it) closes due to bad weather, visitors will be informed at the entrance, and for refund, rescheduling or compensation of the ticket, please contact the site employees.

Remember that the covered part, as a rule, remains accessible in any weather.

The views from the edge

Once up, you will see that the Edge is divided into two parts:

  • On the one hand, you have two closed floors that offer  views of New York through the windows, a good resource for cold days. In each of them there is a bar where you can buy from a soft drink to a beer.
  • On the other, on the lower floor, the star of the observatory awaits you: the outdoor terrace. Even though it is outdoors, it is completely surrounded by glass.

If you are as impatient as we are, surely the terrace will make you eyes and you are looking forward to stepping on it! As soon as you leave, you will be greeted by beautiful views of Downtown, with the One World skyscraper and the Hudson River  as the protagonists.

Do you also see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on the horizon?

And it is that the Edge, like the One World Observatory, is located in the west of Manhattan, and that gives it a quite different perspective from the others, less focused on the heart of the island and closer to the river.

Get close to the glass and look down: can you make out the green line of  the High Line elevated park winding between the buildings ?

Soon you will also see queues to take photos on the three edges of the terrace, the  edges,  where the glass tilts so that (if your legs can hold you…!) you can jump a little over the city.

Don't forget to look down and you'll even see the Vessel, which looks tiny from here.

Photo trick:  Ask your companion to wait inside and, from behind the glass, take a photo of you on the edge  as if you were suspended over the Big Apple.

After taking in the sights of Downtown and New Jersey across the Hudson River, head east to Manhattan, where the spire of the Empire State Building gives you a hint of what lies ahead.

But, first, you will see a crowd of people lying down and taking photos at a specific point on the terrace.

The reason? A part of the floor of the Edge is made of glass! Do you dare to walk over and look down at the miniature New York taxis?

The observatory is so, so high that the feeling we had walking through the glass is that the streets looked like a set.

After challenging the vertigo, it's time to enjoy the views of Midtown and Uptown. From the terrace of the Edge, you will see such emblematic skyscrapers as the Empire State Building or the Chrysler Building, the New Yorker Hotel, Madison Square Garden,  the screens of Times Square ...

The only drawback (and that caught us by surprise, since in the promotional photos they 'forgot' to show it), is that the Empire State Building is almost completely covered by the One Manhattan West skyscraper.

To see it, you'll need to walk to the northeast corner of the Edge terrace. You'll also see the green patch of Central Park stretching to the north, with the new skyscrapers of Billionaires' Row rising up in front of the park.

In this part of the terrace, you will also find stairs with steps where you can sit and enjoy the views.

This is the only corner without glass in between, one of the aspects that we liked least about the Edge and that we will talk about a little further down.

From the top of the stairs, you can access the second floor of the observatory, which is closed and has a bar, tables and sofas where you can contemplate the Big Apple with a wine (expensive as unicorn blood) in your hand. Cheers!

What else you need to know

Information for Parents: Strollers are available for access to the observation deck, but you may be asked to pick up your child and fold the stroller to enter the lift.

It is forbidden to bring your own food and drinks with you (bottled water in a closed container is allowed).

For groups of 15 people or more, a group booking is required.

An engineering marvel

The Edge is not only the tallest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere - many consider it an engineering, architectural and technological marvel. Unlike other observation decks, such as those at Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building, which are located on the roofs of these buildings, The Edge is a triangular wedge that protrudes from the south and east sides of the Hudson Yards skyscraper. Therefore, the name Edge is more than appropriate.

The outer border of the site is made of 79 frameless glass panels 2.7 meters high, located at an angle. They create a feeling of boundless, but safe space - you can even lie down on them to get a better view of the city below - the bustle of the streets, the streams of cars, the outlines of buildings, the geometry of the parks and squares of New York.

About 30 Hudson Yards

The tower at the top of which is the observation deck Edge was built in 2019 and has a height of 387 meters. Today, 30 Hudson Yards is the sixth tallest building in New York.

Almost the entire skyscraper is rented out and there are offices of very famous companies in it:

  • 1st - 15th floor: Wells Fargo Securities offices
  • 66-71 floor: Facebook
  • 72–73 floors: Investment and development company The Related Companies
  • 100-101 floors: Edge Observation Deck and Peak Restaurant
  • 102-103 - technical floors

The Hudson Yards Skywalk complex is the largest development in the modern history of New York City. The cost of this project is estimated at $25 billion.

In addition to office skyscrapers, the complex includes: a shopping center, The Shed art exhibition space, a 5-star Equinox hotel and a unique creation of designer Thomas Heatherwick called Vessel.
