The Meatpacking District is a district in the New York City area of Manhattan that stretches from West 14th Street south to Gansevoort Street and from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street. The Meatpacking Business Improvement District extends these boundaries further north to West 17th Street, east to Eighth Avenue, and south to Horatio Street. Meatpacking District Wikipedia-->

Meatpacking District - New York City

Meatpacking in New York is a historic district in Manhattan. It runs from West of 14th Street to Gansevoort Street and from the Hudson River to Hudson Street. In 1900, there were 250 slaughterhouses and meat production facilities in the quarter. By the way, this explains the origin of the name of the area. Now there are only five left. The area is also famous for its glamorous nightlife.

History of the Meatpacking District nyc

The history of the Meatpacking District is less rosy than its current image. From the 1960s to the 1980s, there was an unprecedented decline in production in the United States. It had a huge impact on this part of the city. Meatpacking has become the epicenter of the drug trade and prostitution. A few years later, the area began to gradually transform. Fashion boutiques and nightclubs began to open here. These days, the area is still famous for its nightlife and trendy shops.

Meatpacking district near sightseeing

I recommend that you definitely visit the Meatpacking district during your visit to New York. This is a relatively small area, but it has a special atmosphere. There are an number of interesting sights here.

1. High Line Park

A special highlight of the Meatpacking area is the High Line Park. This park is located on an old railway overpass for freight trains with an unforgettable view of the city. The park has a lot of interesting plants and flowers, as well as works of art. In summer it is especially beautiful here. Come here to sunbathe or have a romantic time admiring the starry sky. By the way, the streets here are also special. This is one of those neighborhoods where they are all cobbled.

2. Whitney Museum

The Whitney Museum features 20th-century American art. The collection includes more than 21,000 exhibits. Here everyone will find something to their liking: paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and videos. There is a beautiful rooftop terrace where you can relax with a drink in the summer and take in the beautiful views of New York's Meatpacking District.

3. Chelsea Market

Chelsea Market is so big that it takes up an entire block. This former biscuit factory building is filled with food stalls. Chelsea Market is considered one of the largest food markets in the world. Walk here early in the morning and buy delicious picnic food that you can have on the lawn in Little Island Park. This park on stilts is just a short walk away.

Where can you eat delicious food in Meatpacking?

New York's Meatpacking District has plenty of stylish restaurants to kick off your evening. For example, the main restaurant of the STK SteakHouse chain with a luxurious atmosphere. The place will appeal to steak lovers: they have steaks of all sizes and prices. Personally, I always choose "fillet", it has very little fat. You can order it in small or medium size. Little Big Mac is a good choice if you're visiting for the first time. You get two small hamburgers (called "sliders") for $20. The advantage is that they are easy to share. In my opinion, this is one of the best mini burgers in New York. STK is very popular so I highly recommend pre-booking a table.

If you want to enjoy delicious Mexican food, go to one of the restaurants of the Dos Caminos chain. They have many branches, but one of the most beautiful is located in the Meatpacking area. Another great option is  RH Rooftop Restaurant. This special restaurant is located on the rooftop of a furniture store. You can even have a glass of wine surrounded by furniture and immediately choose a new sofa. But mostly people come here, no doubt, to have a drink on the rooftop terrace.

There are not many hotels in Meatpacking, but there are a couple of good options: The Standard, High Line and Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC. They also have trendy rooftop bars. The Standard Grill is located on the ground floor of the Standard Hotel, next to the popular The Standard Biergarten bar. But this is not a restaurant in the usual sense. It has a hipster vibe even though there is no DJ. Standard Grill serves delicious steaks and fish dishes. During the summer, the beautiful terrace is open so you can enjoy the dynamic New York rhythm while sipping a cocktail.
