Where is the city of roses?

Pasadena (Rose City pasadena) is a small city in California. On the US map, it is located in Los Angeles County and ranks sixth in the county in terms of area. The population of the city exceeds 150 thousand inhabitants. It is this city that is known throughout the world for the "Parade of Roses", held annually on the eve of the New Year holidays.

Pasadena is located in northeast Los Angeles. Perhaps Pasadena could be perceived as an ordinary American town if it were not for the buildings entwined with wild roses. Thanks to this, the city looks mysterious and attractive. We can say that Pasadena is one of the greenest and most well-groomed cities in Los Angeles. There are not just a lot of trees here, they have very large crowns. It should be noted the cleanliness that distinguishes Pasadena from other cities in the United States. There are a lot of expensive cars on the city streets, so don't be surprised if you come across a 1966 Mustang.

A bit about history

In 1771, Pasadena was part of the Archangel Gabriel Catholic Mission, after which the mountains and the valley are named. In 1834, the governor of Mexico granted the possession of Juan Marina (a retired officer) a small part of the mission, which was called "San Pascual".

In 1874, Thomas Elliot (of Indiana) formed the settlement. From the Ojibwe language, its name is translated as "the crown of the valley." There were many citrus plantations on its territory, but after the construction of the railroad to Santa Fe, this place acquired the status of a popular winter resort.

Scientific life

Pasadena is home to the California Institute of Technology, one of the leading universities in the country. Near the city there is a research laboratory of jet propulsion, which is one of the branches of NASA. Within the walls of the laboratory, modern equipment used in aviation and electronics is developed and manufactured.

In addition to the university, the city hosts three colleges founded in the first half of the 19th century.

Attractions

The City Hall is considered one of the most popular attractions in the city. The building was built in 1927. About half a million dollars were spent on the construction. City councils are held in the town hall, where important laws are considered and adopted. It was here that Charlie Chaplin was filming The Great Dictator.

The architecture of the building delights with its beauty.

Among the museums it is worth highlighting the following:

Norton Simon museum was founded in 1969. Known for a huge collection of paintings and sculptures by the American millionaire and industrialist Norton Simon, among which the Pasadena Madonna, written by Raphael, occupies a special place. In 1995, the museum was reconstructed, the gardens were remade in order to accommodate a collection of sculptures of the 20th century. In addition, the Norton Simon Theater was built, which hosts lectures, seminars, dance performances, etc.

- "Pacific Asia". Here are collected exhibits that reflect the essence of Eastern traditions, as well as telling about the culture of Oceania.

- Near Pasadena there is the city of San Marino, where among the botanical gardens there is a local library named after Henry Huntington. It, among other unique masterpieces, presents the works of artists T. Gainsborough ("The Blue Boy"), the Madonna of Rogier van der Weyden.

- Pasadena Historical Museum.

Every year, since 1890, the Rose Parade has been held in the city. Another significant event coincides with the period of its holding - the competition of the strongest student teams in American football for the "Pink Bowl". The game was first organized in 1902. Since 1922, the competition has been held at the Rose Bowl stadium. This sports arena is also famous for the fact that in 1994 it hosted football matches of the World Cup, including the semi-final, final and match for 3rd place.

Conclusion

Each of the Californian cities is beautiful and interesting in its own way. Pasadena has a mix of styles, and it's especially interesting to visit the city during the Rose Parade. At this time, streams of tourists rush to the city not only from America, but also from all over the globe. Not all the lucky ones manage to admire the incredible beauty with their own eyes, however, this is not a reason for despair, since the holiday, without fail, is broadcast on television in many countries.
