But the boom, as almost always, was followed by a decline. By the 1890s, silver had lost much of its value due to the discovery of larger mines, and the dusty desert outpost was mostly desert. By the mid-1930s, only four residents remained.
Calico's second wind came in 1951 when Walter Knott, whose uncle had made a fortune in the Calico mine, bought the collection of dilapidated shacks and mines that remained. In 1966, he donated the restored city to San Bernardino County.
Lucy Lanes was the last resident who came to the town to work in 1885 and lived all her life in this city, in 1967 she died.
By 1907, Calico was completely empty and turned into a ghost town.
In the recreated print shop, you can see a friendly skeleton wearing an old-fashioned green visor, and posters of madams and lunatics are still displayed on the walls, with wanted inscriptions.
Today it is a picturesque tourist trap. You can ride through an old mine on a tram, shoot at a shooting range and spend the night at a camp under the Calico Hills.
But by far the most attractive area is Calico Cemetery, where climbers and explorers from Calico's past - and modern day boosters and cowboys - are buried under handmade markers, their graves covered in desert rock. One wooden marker reads: "Here lies Jeremiah Citizen 1928-2005.
