City of
Malibu is a strong north-south area in the western part of Los Angeles, located northwest of the area, about 45 kilometer from downtown. Besides its best beaches, Malibu is known for its expensive shopping and great restaurants along the Pacific coastline right along the road.

History of Malibu

The first inhabitants of Malibu were the Chumash Indians, who named the area "Humalivo", which means "the loud noise of the surf." Subsequently, the name was adapted for pronunciation and became "Malibu".

On September 28, 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed to the Malibu lagoon and claimed 13,000 acres of land from the inhabitants for the King of Spain. Subsequently, the land remained untouched for over 200 years.

In 1776, King Charles III of Spain sent a group of settlers. One of them was Jose Tapia, who founded a ranch in Malibu canyon and later became the first owner. The commander of the Spanish army, Tapia, received land in recognition of his impressive military service.

City of Malibu changed hands several times in the 1800s. In the end, the Rindge family bought the land in 1891 for $ 300,000. The head of the family, Frederick Hastings Rindge, was a very wealthy man. Rindge purchased Malibu as a home for his family, and then expanded it from 13,000 to 17,000 acres.

Frederick's wife strictly protected her family's privacy and did not allow outsiders to enter the Malibu area by installing gates and fences and hiring armed guards who constantly patrolled the property.

In 1929, Ridge's daughter built the Adamson House near Malibu Pier. Today, the house is a National Historic Landmark and a museum open to the public, displaying ancient pottery artifact's. The Rindge family became so fond of the Moorish architectural style that in 1926 they opened pottery workshops that supplied the area with ceramic tiles and ceramics.

In the 1930s, due to financial problems, the family agreed to let several Hollywood movie stars rent land to build houses. Ten years later, she again found herself in financial difficulties and was forced to sell the land.

Although Malibu beaches are open to the public, today City of Malibu is better known as a gated community and home to many famous celebrities, including Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Howie Mandel and Mel Brooks.

To get to Malibu Beach, take bus # 534 along the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Monica, where you can also change buses to downtown Los Angeles on Fairfax Avenue and Boulevard Washington. The bus to Malibu runs much less frequently than most other buses to Santa Monica and Venice, and its stops are far from each other. Therefore, to travel around the Malibu area, it is highly recommended to use a car (you can rent it), so as not to walk tens of kilometers.
