Malibu Lagoon State Beach

Malibu State lagoon Beach or Surfrider beach is a popular sandy beach and surf spot between Malibu Pier and Malibu Lagoon. Surfrider Beach is part of Malibu State Lagoon Beach, which has another parking lot next to the lagoon on the West Pacific Coast Highway. The name Surfrider is given to this beach for good reason - it offers good waves for surfing, therefore it is considered a conditional meeting place for the most experienced surfers in los Angeles, California.

The name of Surfrider Beach quite accurately reflects its purpose today. It was chosen due to the fact that the ocean waves here are quite smooth and ideal for surfing. By the way, swimming or snorkeling is prohibited on Lagoon Beach, as well as kayaking - you can only surf. However, if you step a little to the side, to Malibu beach, then you can do all this without any problems. In the article I will tell you in detail about the most important surfing beach in California - Surfrider Beach in the Malibu lagoon, how to get to it and what to do there besides swimming on the board.

Malibu Lagoon State Beach

Malibu state lagoon beach  (surfrider beach):

Malibu Lagoon is a place in southern California where Malibu Creek flows into the Pacific Ocean. It is here that the famous lagoon beach or Surfrider Beach in Malibu is located, stretched along the sandy coast and intended mainly for surfing. Although surfers, like fishermen, don't want to share their favorite spots, none of them will be surprised by my story about Malibu State lagoon Beach in California, which is without a doubt one of the best places to surf in the US.

Description of the beach

Like all beaches in Malibu, this is a fairly dynamic water area with impressive foamy waves and a steady wind blowing. It is here that you can see surfers on the crest of the waves and those same notorious lifeguards with sexy bodies and chocolate tan. The bottom, like the beach itself, is sandy and even - without sharp cliffs and stones. The entrance to the water is smooth and soft, but with waves.

This is the perfect place for those who want to hone their skiing skills on a board or kayak. All the necessary equipment can be rented at rental points right on the beach. There are also instructors who will conduct the first classes with beginners. This area is also quite suitable for swimming - the water here is amazingly clear.

The beach area itself is small - only about a mile in length, but it is a pearl that surfers come to see not only from other states, but from different parts of the world.

When is the best time to go?

To relax on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to go in the summer, when the temperature is warm enough for swimming. In places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands, it is comfortable to relax all year round.

I recommend August-September is the best time to surf at Surfrider Beach.

Hotels on Malibu lagoon Beach

Near the beach there are several hotels of different price ranges: Malibu Beach Inn  and Malibu Motel.

How to get to Surfrider Beach in Malibu

There are two main ways to get to Malibu state lagoon beach or surfrider beach on your own:

By car:

1) From Santa Monica, drive about 20 km along the Pacific Coast Highway, which runs along the Pacific coast.
2) From Interstate 101, turn towards Las Virgins Road and drive 16 km west through Malibu Canyon, and then turn onto the Pacific Coast Highway (this street in Los Angeles is one of the longest) and drive 2.5 km east to the entrance to the parking lot on Cross Creek Road. Then walk west across the bridge and walk to the Adamson House Museum. GPS coordinates: 34.0333 / -118.6783.

By bus:

If you don't drive or don't want to rent a car, and you still want to stare at the surfers, then don't miss this great chance to get to Surfrider Beach in the Malibu area! You need to take the bus route 534 (ticket price - $ 1.75, read more in the article about transport in Los Angeles). It takes about half an hour to drive from the center of Santa Monica to the Malibu lagoon, observing stunning views of the suburbs of Hollywood's La La Land along the way.

Helpful Tip: We booked a car in advance (here >>) and started our route around the States directly from the Los Angeles airport. We recommend renting a car for a period multiple of a whole week, as it turns out cheaper.

Malibu lagoon state beach parking

There are two parking lots on Malibu lagoon Beach, so there should be no problems with parking for a car. The first is located on the west side of the bridge over the Malibu Creek. Another car park is located right next to Adamson House, but it's quite difficult to find a free space. Both parking lots are paid. If you want to take a quick look at Surfrider Beach, you can try to park your car along the road without violating the rules and requirements of the signs.

Parking fees at lagoon Beach:

Full day - $12.00 per car
3 hours - $9.00 per car
2 hours - $6.00 per car
1 hour - $3.00 per car

Malibu lagoon beach Infrastructure

On the beach for a quality holiday there is everything and even more. Toilets, showers, paved trails for joggers and bikes, sun loungers with parasols, and a well-equipped fishing area are a comfortable place to relax with plenty of benches and great views of the Pacific Ocean. There are many hotels near it, so there will be no problems with accommodation. One of the most popular options in terms of price and quality is the Malibu Country Inn hotel.

At the entrance to the pier there is a restaurant, and at the end there is a cafe where you can find a more budget option for lunch or dinner. There is a sand volleyball court next to the pier, and lifeguards are on duty for children and swimmers during peak hours. The beach has separate areas for swimming and surfing.

Be sure to visit local attractions - the Adamson House and the Malibu Lagoon Museum, which presents expositions that tell about the history of the region, as well as the origin of the surfing tradition in the local area. The lagoon itself is dotted with trails and is an excellent place for bird hunting.

What can you do on Malibu Beach besides surfing?

The answer is very simple - literally everything you can do on the beach: swim, sunbathe, have a picnic and walk along the beach, play beach volleyball or swim with the children, scuba dive or watch rare birds, go fishing on the pier or sit in Cafe. In winter, you can even watch the migration of whales along the West Coast of North America. And on Surfrider Beach you can see pelicans and sometimes sea lions swim here (in large numbers you can see them in San Simeon).

Useful information

1. There are not enough parking spaces for everyone in the parking lot - perhaps this is what insures the beach from congestion. Beach parking offers only 90 spaces for $12 per day, but they tend to fill up early in the morning. If you don't make it in time, the best option would be to park on the Pacific Coast side of the highway, but it would take a long walk to the beach.

2. Renting a board on this beach will cost $30-40 a day, and learning to surf is $125 for a 1.5-hour lesson, which includes wetsuit and board rental.

3. On this beach you can get a good catch from the Pacific Ocean - local fishermen most often catch sea bass and halibut.

4. The coast is prone to frequent storms, so if you are unsteady on the water, it is better not to sail away from the coast if heavy seas are predicted on the ocean.
