History of Ferry Point Park

The land that is now Ferry Point Park (Wikipedia) was originally purchased by the city in 1937 from the Roman Catholic House of the Good Shepherd. The park was named for the many ferries that once traveled between the Bronx and Queens. In the 1930s, there were ambitious plans for a beach, bathhouse, and cafeteria complex at the park, but these plans were never realized. The park was opened to the public in 1941, and it has been gradually expanding ever since.

In 2015, the park was expanded to include a new 18-hole golf course designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus. The golf course was built on land that was formerly a landfill. The expansion also included new ballfields, bicycle and pedestrian paths, basketball courts, and a comfort station.

In 2020, the park was further expanded to include a new waterfront walkway and saltwater marsh. The walkway is part of a larger project to create a continuous greenbelt along the East River waterfront. Visit nycgovparks.org Learn full History of Ferry Point Park.
