A Serendipitous Asheville Adventure: Hiking, History, and Foodie Delights

Rajesh Kumar Rana       Saturday, January 13, 2024

Asheville, nestled amidst the misty peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains, beckoned with its promise of adventure. Fueled by a spontaneous Friday afternoon decision, we embarked on a weekend getaway, our hearts set on exploring the city's natural beauty, rich history, and culinary scene.

Weekend in Asheville, NC

Nature Of Asheville, North Carolina

Nature's Enchanting Embrace:

Our journey began with a trek up the Mt. Pisgah trail, a Tolkien-esque wonderland of rhododendron bushes and winding paths. Reaching the summit, we were greeted by a mesmerizing spectacle - fog swirling around us, revealing glimpses of neighboring ridges like phantom islands. The descent was a symphony of chirping juncos and the occasional flash of a chickadee, culminating in the sighting of our first Eastern Towhee.

Next, we embarked on a trail leading to an old fire tower, bathed in the soft hues of autumn foliage. Walking through a sea of mossy trees, we relished the contrast to the rugged terrain of Mt. Pisgah. As the path began another ascent, we decided to savor the views and descend, our hearts full of the day's discoveries.

Winding Roads and Mountain Vistas:

Our journey continued along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, a ribbon of asphalt snaking through the mountains. Parking at Graveyard Fields proved a challenge, but we opted for the nearby Knob Trail, rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of cloud-kissed mountaintops. Standing above the clouds, we felt a sense of awe and serenity.

A Culinary Symphony at Early Girl Eatery:

Down in the vibrant heart of Asheville, Early Girl Eatery became our culinary haven. We embarked on a flavor odyssey, savoring broccoli and cheddar hush puppies with a delightful apple butter dip, smoky grilled pork loin with creamy mac 'n cheese, and a melt-in-your-mouth pimento grilled cheese. Each bite was a burst of fresh, local ingredients, leaving us wanting more.

After-Dinner Adventures:

An REI pitstop later, Louisa proudly donned her new hiking boots, ready for further exploration. Back at the hotel, the nearby fair buzzed with activity, but the traffic remained manageable.

Early Morning Tranquility at Graveyard Flats:

Determined to beat the crowds, we arrived at Graveyard Flats before sunrise. The initial steep descent led to a gentle trail, where we relished the cascading waterfalls and vibrant fall foliage in peaceful solitude. The air, crisp and cool, invigorated our senses.

Dinner Delights and Artistic Encounters:

Returning to Early Girl Eatery, we indulged in a repeat of the heavenly hush puppies, this time with both the apple butter and the tangy garlic-dill dressing. The pan-seared trout with toasted almond butter and the ever-so-satisfying curry pumpkin soup were divine. Downtown, the city pulsed with artistic energy, boasting vibrant murals, sculptures, and street performers on every corner. A Fleetwood Mac-singing juggling clown added a touch of whimsy to the evening.

Kilwin's: A Sweet Ending:

Our final stop was Kilwin's, a haven of delectable ice cream and fudge. The toasted coconut and dulce de leche ice cream melted in our mouths, while the chocolate peanut butter fudge and French silk fudge were pure decadence. We left with satisfied smiles and a promise to return soon.

Asheville, with its breathtaking scenery, rich history, and vibrant culinary scene, had cast its spell on us. This weekend getaway was just a taste of its endless charm, a promise to return and explore further. So, pack your bags, lace up your boots, and get ready to fall in love with Asheville's magic.
