The Green Card lottery or Diversity immigrant visa Lottery, is a visa drawing program that, if successful, entitles the winner to obtain permanent resident status in the United States of America.
For many, such a lottery is the only chance to move from a disadvantaged region to the United States. However, in addition to the strict selection of participants and a rather small chance of winning, there are also various restrictions on participation, below we will consider them.
The main selection criterion is the geographical principle: all Green Card visas are divided between six geographical regions, according to the principle, the lower the level of immigration, the more visas are allocated to a given region. For countries whose natives have exceeded the US immigration limit in the past five years, they do not participate in the lottery. Within each region, no state will receive more than seven percent of visas in one year.
Other requirements for participants are education and profession. The applicant must have completed secondary school education or 2 years of work experience in the last 5 years in a profession that requires at least 2 years of study.

Starting from DV-2012, checking the results of the drawing is possible only through the official website using the registration number that is given to you upon completion of the registration procedure in the Green Card lottery.
The wives and husbands of the lucky ones who received the Green Card, as well as their children under the age of 21, are also entitled to obtain a visa for the purpose of further cohabitation.
Persons who meet the proficiency requirements, which are limited by some simple but strict rules, can benefit from the DV program organized every year. The winners of the DV program are determined by a random draw by the computer. Visas are divided among six geographical regions, and no country in these regions may exceed seven percent of the total number of visas to be issued in the relevant year.
