Offered by France to the United States, inaugurated in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was born from the imagination of Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. Here are the impressive images of its construction, in Paris.
The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, a monumental achievement that has now become an internationally recognised symbol, was offered to the United States by France. Initially, it was to celebrate the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776. But the construction of this statue took longer than expected (and required two and a half times the funds). It was only in 1886 that it was inaugurated on "Liberty" Island, at the entrance to the port of New York. The Statue of Liberty has long been the first image of America for emigrants. The know-how of Gustave Eiffel
A real success for its designer, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty also benefited, among others, from the know-how of Gustave Eiffel. This flagship achievement of the 19th century, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is made up of 300 copper plates assembled using the "repoussé" technique and a metal frame.
