Guide Review: Evergreen Lodge
Evergreen Lodge is our favorite vacation spot when visiting Yosemite, offering good value for money, more than making up for the distance from Yosemite Valley.
The oldest parts of Evergreen Lodge were built in the 1920s, giving them a charming, old-fashioned feel, but most of the lodging is in bumps and cottages. The old "vintage" cottages have been meticulously refurbished inside to match the newest. And they are all done in a smart, clean style. The housekeeping is impeccable.
All this makes it a tranquil forest retreat with a host of modern amenities. In fact, there is some danger that you might like The Evergreen Cabin so much that you don't want to leave it, but if you're mainly looking for a quiet, extraordinary experience, this might be a good thing. Throw in a massage, swim or guided hike and you will rejuvenate quickly.
Take time to wander around the hotel and you'll find plenty of hidden fun things to do, such as a giant spider web of ropes, a sleepy hammock, or a tree trunk fort. And make sure you find the sunset deck at the right time, as it has a great view.
The best way to be happy at Evergreen Lodge is to know what to expect. The fact that there are houses in the house does not mean that you can cook in them. Rooms have refrigerators, but no kitchen. It is 5.5 miles off the main road (15 minutes drive) which is one of the reasons it is so quiet, but enough that once you get there you probably don't want to go anywhere. still eat. Don't let this be a concern. Their restaurant serves innovative dishes made from local produce, including very interesting vegetarian options.
Due to its remote location, Evergreen Lodge depends on satellite Internet access, which is slow and only available in public areas. Don't plan to download a movie, watch streaming videos, or email photos to friends. Some people may assign negative points to this, but we find it refreshing to be in a place where all our modern gizmos can't distract us.
Mobile phones are unlikely to work at Evergreen Lodge. They offer free calls anywhere in the United States so you can call home, with only a few phones available in public places.
